10 Easy Ways to Encourage Gross Motor Skills at Home

Gross motor skills are the movements children use every day to sit, crawl, stand, walk, and explore the world around them. The good news is that many of these skills can be encouraged through simple, everyday activities at home.

Here are 10 easy ways to support your child's gross motor development:

1. Spend Time on the Floor

Floor play gives babies the space to roll, crawl, reach, and explore while building strength and coordination.

2. Encourage Tummy Time

For younger babies, tummy time helps strengthen the neck, shoulders, back, and core—important muscles for future movement.

3. Let Your Child Explore

Provide a safe environment where your child can move freely and discover new ways to explore independently.

4. Practice Pulling to Stand

Place favorite toys on a low, stable surface to encourage your child to pull up and practice standing.

5. Encourage Cruising

Arrange sturdy furniture so your child can safely move from one surface to another while practicing balance.

6. Play Games That Involve Movement

Activities like rolling a ball, dancing, or reaching for bubbles make movement fun while improving coordination.

7. Spend Time Outdoors

Parks, grassy areas, and playgrounds provide different surfaces that challenge balance and strengthen muscles.

8. Choose Toys That Encourage Movement

Look for purposeful tools that encourage standing, pushing, balancing, and independent exploration rather than passive play.

9. Celebrate Progress

Every child develops at their own pace. Celebrate small milestones and give plenty of encouragement as your child learns new skills.

10. Support Walking Through Purposeful Play

The Little Balance Box Grow was designed by physical therapist Dr. Shannon Davis, PT, DPT, to encourage safe, natural movement during the early walking journey. Beginning around 6 months with parent support, it helps children practice standing, weight shifting, balance, and stepping while building confidence. Its adjustable height grows with your child before transitioning into a toddler table, providing developmental value long after those first independent steps.
